Welcome to my ruminations on books. Well, on movies and television and occasionally other websites and music, but mostly on books. Archives are here for now because I can't figure out how to get them to show up on this page.

My journal is no more. This is my only current online presence.

The title, of course, is taken from Wordsworth.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan says that the Bush Administration never told the citizens of the US that Iraq was an "imminent threat," and that the term has been coined by the media, and that the Administration should now be "absolved for overstating the case for war and misleading the American people."

Oh really? They never said that, huh?

Unmet Need Hits Record Level For the Unemployed, Rev. 1/29/04: "An estimated 375,000 unemployed individuals are exhausting their regular unemployment benefits in January without qualifying for any further assistance and are receiving neither a paycheck nor unemployment benefits. Based on the latest data, nearly two million unemployed workers are expected to be in this situation during the first six months of 2004. In no other month on record — and in no other six-month period for which data are available — have so many unemployed workers exhausted their regular unemployment benefits without being able to receive additional aid. This finding holds even if the number of exhaustees in previous years is adjusted upward to reflect the growth in the labor force since then."

Oh right - but joblessness is going down! Down it goes! That rate the Bush Administration touts is the result of fewer people being able to continue to file for unemployment, not because fewer people are out of work. But let's twist that information for our own good, because God forbid we should be honest with the citizens of the United States about anything.

Twisted economic data. The largest deficit in the shortest amount of time in history. Two failing military actions. Conservative media outlets putting a conservative spin on the news rather than reporting the honest truth. Lies to the people about Iraq and then backpedaling and denial of the lies.

And Bill Clinton was impeached because he lied about an extramarital affair.

I'm sorry - what? What country is this? Bush is an embarrassment - not just to the country, but to the Republican Party and to politicians in general.

The Oscar Nominations are out, and I am very sad that Sean Astin didn't get a Best Supporting Actor nod for Return of the King. They're definitely ensemble movies, but I think several of the actors have deserved nominations over the last few years and yet only Ian McKellen has received one. Just like L.A. Confidential, maybe the performances cancelled each other out? I remember being infuriated that there were no nominations for Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, Russell Crowe, or Kevin Spacey, but there was one (and a win!) for Kim Basinger. (I haven't even mentioned Danny DeVito, Ron Rifkin, or David Straithairn - that may have been the best cast of all time). I feel the same way about LOTR. I really wanted Sean Astin to get a nomination.

(But Johnny Depp! Johnny Depp! Johnny Depp??)
